Youth Development Specialist
Flatbush Development Corporation (FDC) is a Brooklyn non-profit and community development organization. FDC seeks an experienced youth development professional to facilitate career and college counseling, and other youth development activities for a diverse high school-aged (14-21) youth population. Full time Position.
Responsibilities:
Under the supervision of the Director of Youth Programs, the Youth Development Specialist will carry out the following duties:
- Teach a credit bearing advisory group class with a focus on Career and College Planning
- Facilitate peer education training with the goal of developing a team of youth peer educators who will facilitate workshops on life skills, youth leadership, health issues and financial literacy;
- With input from youth, develop a service learning project that will be carried out in the local community
- Provide individual counseling with youth to support academic achievement, youth employment/job readiness, career and college planning and other youth development goals;
- Facilitate inspiring/engaging grade specific activities/workshops on themes such as leadership development, gender, and cultural diversity training, other topics of interest
- Conduct job readiness workshops
- Develop mentor relationships for program youth with community and mentoring programs
- Establish relationships with local businesses/to provide youth internships;
- Organize college tours, informational workshops and other support services that support youth during the college application process;
- Organize/facilitate informational workshops for parents to increase their support of youth during the college application process;
- Maintain all administrative records, including biweekly timesheets, expense receipts, monthly attendance and quarterly program reports;
- Execute any and all other tasks necessary for the successful operation of FDC youth programming.
Qualifications:
- Bachelors degree in child / youth development, elementary education, physical education, recreation, fine arts, social work or a related field;
- Minimum 2 years of experience working with youth;
- Experience working with high school youth in a school-based or community-based setting;
- Outstanding organizational, administrative and writing skills; ability to think critically; attention to detail; ability to prioritize; ability to meet deadlines; ability to multi-task and work in a fast paced environment;
- Ability to work with ethnically diverse populations
Salary: Commensurate with Experience
