About Us

Our Mission

FDC is dedicated to meeting the needs of a diverse and vibrant Brooklyn. FDC identifies and responds to these needs by building partnerships, creating programs, and developing campaigns that promote enhanced quality of life, safety, equity, and preservation of our community.

Flatbush Development Corporation is a registered 501c-3, exempt from Federal Income Tax under the Internal Revenue Code.

Our History

In 1975, a group of homeowners looked out and saw a neighborhood in decline. They knew something had to be done. The group organized tenants in apartment buildings to combat poor conditions and prevent arson and abandonment, and worked with merchants on the neighborhood’s commercial strips. They created and operated job training programs, after-school and summer programs for youth, and helped a steady stream of new immigrants assimilate into the neighborhood.

By 1980, FDC had expanded into full-scale housing rehab, using emerging tax incentives to stabilize the community.

The work paid off. Grassroots efforts created a stable community that continues to attract a full spectrum of homebuyers, renters, and merchants. Flatbush became, and remains, one of the city’s most desirable neighborhoods.

With that, FDC remains committed to preserving affordable housing, supporting local businesses, providing immigrant support services, and offering youth and family programs.

We serve a 2.5-square-mile catchment area, from Parkside Avenue to Avenue H, and Bedford Avenue to Coney Island Avenue, recognized by the U.S. Census Bureau as one of the most diverse areas in the country.
