Senior Housing Success

At 63, Jennifer Beckles came to Flatbush Development Corporation with one goal: safe, stable senior housing. She found a case manager who wouldn’t let up until she got there.

FDC case manager Artoneta Berisha got to work right away, submitting senior housing applications to CCBQ and JASA, setting up Beckles’ Housing Connect account, and entering her into multiple housing lotteries. Then came the City PHEPS voucher — often one of the hardest parts of the process, with wait times that can stretch for years. For Beckles, it took 17 days.

“We recognize that this doesn’t always happen, and getting a voucher can take years,” FDC staff said. “But this is what it looks like when persistence meets the right support.”

With the voucher in hand, the team didn’t stop there. They uploaded it, applied to additional housing lotteries on Beckles’ behalf, and handed her a curated list of brokers experienced in working with voucher holders — putting the next step of the search directly in her hands.

Beckles’ journey isn’t over. But she’s far closer to home than she was just weeks ago, and FDC is proud to have walked alongside her every step of the way.
