A Kick Off to Open Streets

We had our first Newkirk Avenue Open Streets of the season on Sunday, June 11th

This past Sunday was the first Open Streets of the season. We started off the day with a pop-up at Cedar Star Catering, a kitchen on Rugby Road and Newkirk Avenue that sells Kosher Lebanese food prepared by chef Raisie Saad.

There was a reggae DJ outside of Coffee Mob Bar & Roastery on Newkirk Avenue and East 16th Street while Soccer Fun for Kids was going on up by Rugby Road.

After the wonderfully costumed Chinelos dancers danced and danced and danced we strung up the piñata and kids swarmed onto the pavement and crowded under the piñata.

The finale was at WattLi Bar and Kitchen, where Unison Steel played steel drums and covered a range of iconic songs such as Just the Two of Us by Bill Withers and Grover Washington, Jr. and Toxic by Britney Spears in upbeat calypso tones.

It was a great start to Open Streets as we saw people ambling Newkirk and stopping in their tracks to grab a bite to eat or listen to some steel drums. The most climactic event though, was undoubtably the piñata game!
